  • 1 star reviewI actually live in the village of this pub and have done for 11yrs. I would rather travel to eat or drink. Most unwelcome staff every experienced. Went back in recently (June2012), as new management, but same experience. If you don't have a yorkshire accent don't bother as they obviously don't want your money!!!

  • 2 star reviewWell what a shame , we have been traveling to the Blacksmiths arms from darlington for years it has always been outstanding value for money with excellent food and great staff so we were very upset by this evenings visit , we booked as we did not want to be disapointed only to find that we need not have bothered , all but 1 other table stood empty , after standing waiting for a while to be served we got our drinks and found our own way to the table where we sat again waiting for a menu , we chose our order and again sat and waited for what seemed like a long time before our food arrived . The food itself was very poor to say the least , my 7 year old daughter had chosen a burger and chips from the childrens menu and when it came she took one bite and pushed it to one side , it turned out the bun was stale and the burger (homemade i think) was absolutely huge around an inch and a half thick and very over cooked , an adult would have struggled to get it down let alone a child. My son aged 5 was presented with some chicken nuggets that look like they came from the value section of a local supermarket and again were over cooked and burned around the edges . My wife was served a sirloin steak that was over done rather than a med grilling like she asked for but she ate it anyway as hunger had got the better of her . My own meal was a shambles to be frank , im not one for complaining as i hate the thought of upsetting people but i feel that others should be warned . My mixed grill was very generous in size but of a very low quality , the sausage was again straight out of the frozen food section of said supermarket utterly tasteless and very processed , there was what i belive to be liver that was cremated followed by steak , pork chop , lamb chop and a piece of very fatty gammon , 2 onion rings finished off the plate , all of the above was over cooked and dry , i tried my best to eat the selection of over cooked meat before giving up and eating the egg and onion rings which were very nice . Im annoyed because we visited the blacksmiths just after it had been taken over in the summer for sunday lunch and it was fantastic , we had been recomending the new owners to our friends and shouting about how good the food was . After the chap came to take our plates away my wife pointed out that my food was very dry to which the chap just looked and wandered off without an appology , he could see by the food left on my plate that it had not been enjoyed and at £15 for 2 onion rings and an egg was very expensive indeed . We will not be returning to the blacksmiths and judging by all the empty tables we are not alone in our decision. In summary the food was well below standard , the staff were very disinterested , if the owners read this can i suggest that they start using quality food again rather than supermarket value ranges and show a little more interest in the customers rather than chatting in the kitchen and putting the cook off doing the food either that or change the cook for a chef . Again what a shame ....
