• The King Charles, Poole, Thames Street, Poole, BH15 1JN Why would you eat here? Why indeed? I am a professional guy, in town and on expenses.. Upon arrival I asked to open a tab for my meal and drink(s), I was asked for my credit card so they could hold it behind the bar.. of course I refused, and decided to do pay as you go.. Ordered a pint and a sirloin steak (well they do advertise themselves as a steak house) Within 10 minutes, my food arrived, it did not look too bad, the peas looked shrivelled though (dimpled and light green on the dimple edges), I can easily forego the peas.. the chips looked nice.. the steak looked ok, but a bit dark for a medium.. That was until I cut into it.. it was a hard cut, even with the razor sharp steak knife, this was going to be a battle, I figured I would fight on, as it might be better when I get to the middle.. alas.. no.. it got worse.. no sign of the pink middle I was yearning for.. no sign of the battle getting easier.. I gave up.. I had eaten 2/3rds of the chips and half of the steak.. but the battle was no longer worth the reward, I would have given up a lot earlier had I have not worked through the lunch hour earlier.. At no point was I visited by the staff to ask if my meal was ok. So.. I decided to let the management know that I was not happy.. I delivered my plate to the bar..the barmaid fetched the manager (also the chef.. so I knew I was onto a loser here).. I complained about the dire quality of the steak, was offered a complimentary drink, I refused the drink as it was such hollow gesture, it was hardly worth him making it. I can see now why they want you to pay for your food in advance at this place.. The beer is nice.. but I would advise you to avoid this place for food. As I paid for this meal with a credit card, I shall be contacting the credit card company to ask for chargeback and will also alert them to the policy of the request to retain the card behind the bar as this is also against the terms of their credit card payment agreement.
