• If anyone reads the piece below from some annoying woman please ignore it as it is absolute rubbish. I've been in Avalon on numerous occasions with my 2 children and found the food great the music great and the staff attentive and fantastic. The bacon sarnies are possibly the best in Darlo

• My Mother and I were shopping in Darlington with my 18 month old daughter. We decided to take a lunch break as I also needed to feed my daughter and change her nappy. We chose Avalon Bar, Kitchen and Terrace. As we got inside a waiter was walking towards us. My Mother asked if him if there were any changing facilities for babies. He rudely replied “NO!” A female employee serving behind the bar interjected announcing that there were no changing facilities as Avalon was a bar. She suggested that I could use the toilet floor to change my daughter’s nappy. I asked my Mother to take a look at the toilets to see if there was a more suitable place, other than the floor, to change her. The woman then declared that she was only trying to do us a favour and reiterated that Avalon is a bar and not equipped to cater for children. Due to her agitated demeanour, I politely turned and quietly asked if she would like us to leave? Her reply was, “YES, we don’t need your sort in here!” I was utterly shocked and appalled by the unprofessional, rude and disgraceful behaviour adopted by both employees. As we proceeded to leave the woman it evident that she was annoyed. She threw items around behind the bar and was extremely loud vocally. I could have stayed to discuss her customer service issues further, but it was clear to all on looking patrons that was doing an excellent job at disgracing herself. My mother and I have visited many establishments for lunch and have NEVER been treated with such lack of respect. I was under the impression that it is not permissible to discriminate against parents with children but Avalon clearly does. Had the personnel concerned been professional and politely explained the situation to us we would have happily left. Maybe a noticed needs to be displayed outside – NO CHILDREN WELCOME! For a wonderful, family friendly place please visit Uno Momento. It is only a few doors away but far more professional and approachable than Avalon.
