  • 1 star reviewAs consumers in a democratic society it’s wrong for any company to try to remove a genuine review simply because they don’t wish to be the recipients of bad publicity – it’s called freedom of speech! My experience with Calder Motor Company Ltd, Kirknewton They had what appeared to be a nice second-hand 13 year-old car with low mileage for just under £2000 -- the price seemed high for a regular car but it looked good on their website and admittedly it looked not too bad in real life; both the outside and inside were clean for its age. One of the staff from Calder Motors even said, quote ''you won't find anything wrong with it''. Anyway, the car was purchased and Calder Motors were instructed to give it a full service prior to collection (this cost an extra £100 approximately, but on collection was informed that only the oil and oil filter were changed -- certainly not a full service or as instructed, and a bit pricey but never mind). The first thing that was wrong was the electrically operated passenger window would only work by pressing the switch on the driver's door panel. Then it was noticed that the rear window wiper and washer didn't work. To be honest, these faults were not a big worry even though Calder Motors stated ''you won't find anything wrong with it'' -- after all it was a 13 year old car. However, there were a couple of things that were more concerning, one of which was that every time the steering was turned full lock there was a loud 'crack' coming from the front passenger wheel. Second, there were no brake lights when the brake pedal was applied. And thirdly, there was a rather loud and worrying 'knocking' noise coming from the engine when the car was started from cold. So, somewhat concerned, a short time after buying the car from Calder Motors it was taken to a local garage who were asked to investigate these issues, at the same time an M.O.T was requested -- at the very least you'd expect the car to pass an M.O.T -- after all it was just purchased from a garage who claim to have thousands of happy customers. The results; Needles to say it failed the MOT, 1/The cracking was in fact a broken front spring - £120 2/Brake light switch faulty - £40 3/Exhaust holed - £120 4/Each and every brake needed overhauled -- pads, shoes, discs, drums, two rear wheel brake cylinders (seized), slider pin kits for the front (seized) - £250 5/Drive shaft gaiter holed - £45 6/ Two front ball joints - £100 7/ And the MOT Total cost around £700 including labour (they advised the engine knocking was a worn engine. Not willing to spend huge amounts on a repairing the engine, the oil levels were monitored and topped up once a fortnight - the car required about one litre of oil for every 500 miles roughly). To conclude, this was an old car admittedly, but who would expect to buy, from a garage which claims on its website that 'Our team are experienced, trustworthy and professional - our aim is to offer you the very best value for money on used cars in East Calder', a car in such a condition (unless it cost around £200, but not £2000). Is it not laughable they should state '...the very best value for money'. Do Calder Motors believe that what was sold on this occasion was 'good value for money'? Surely It's unacceptable for any garage to sell to a customer a vehicle in such a state, especially since they have all the facilities at hand to check them over properly before any sale -- is there really any excuse. Conclusion, I would never purchase a car from Calder Motors of Kirknewton again, nor would I ask them to service my car, nor would I ever recommend them to anybody. I'm sure they do have their share of happy customers, but this was my experience.

  • 1 star reviewTerrible service and car - avoid at all costs. Truly the worst buying experience I have ever had - car did not last 6 months before major failure and nothing but excuses and appalling service - warranty? - forget it. Worthy of watchdog.

  • 1 star reviewFamily owned used car dealer (appears to be run by daughter and son-in-law). Quite pricey for aged cares. Our experience - Customer service fairly poor (5 out of 10) and instructions not carried out as per agreement (the usual lame excuse pass-the-buck reason). This didn’t lead to any remedy and for that reason would not recommend them to anyone. As for the car – time will tell. When we collected it there was no petrol in the tank and was running on the fumes – didn’t make it to the nearest garage! Seems like it will need brakes all round too.
