  • 1 star reviewWe regularly visit the chequers and have eaten here on many, many times. We were looking forward to new menu and fresh food but what a disappointment . Gone are the light bites menu of reasonable priced baguettes , wraps etc all served with fries and salad replaced by soggy doorstop sandwiches, no side salad and a few French fries. We thought we would try again a few days later and ordered from the main menus, so disappointing. Overpriced, not great quality and lacked any wow factor on the plate. No garnishes, lack lustre side dishes that you have to order to go with your meal that pushed the price up £20 per main course. Hysterically they have adopted the strange thing of ripping all bread into 'duck' sized portions.....why? Vitually all dishes state come with chips, the reality is they come with a tower/pile of 9 soggy wedges. The chequers used to be good value food that perhaps needed a little more home cooking, however it has been utterly ruined by the new manager, I can only imagine he hadn't realised he had acquired a pub!! Return to honest food at honest prices and you might just not lose all your customers!

  • 1 star reviewI have been lunching at the Chequers for many years, but on my recent visit this week found that the whole experience had gone horribly wrong!! The menu had changed completely - gone were the 'Light Bites' which included wraps, french bread etc with delicious fillings - particularly the crayfish. The alternative was 'Doorstep' sandwiches, which we all decided to avoid!! We all just chose a starter of fishcakes made with salmon & crab. The pub was virtually empty, but our fishcakes took ages to arrive. There was hardly any fish taste at all in them, just potato. £6.50 was extremely expensive for 2 tiny 'potato' cakes & a small amount of salad leaf. We thought we would fill ourselves up with a dessert - they were priced at £6!! We were only eating in the pub area & I consider the menu prices to be that of a good restaurant. Most main courses were around the £14 mark & some more expensive. A couple on the next table had the 'Doorstep' sandwiches & they complained also. The owner, who has just apparently taken the pub over, said that everything was now fresh & the bread was cut to order. If you wanted the bread thinner, you could ask for that!! There were strange fillings for the sandwiches, notably fish fingers!! (I'm sure they are not freshly made!!) If we had wanted to spend that amount of money, we would have gone to a good restaurant, not a pub!!
