  • 4 star reviewNow this place has been part of my life since I was a kid and I just love it. Located opposite the stunning river Irwell (seriously) lined with lush greenery, I’m not afraid to say on hotter days you would be forgiven for thinking you were in Italy (I don’t know where exactly, somewhere that looks just like Radcliffe). Nature abounds here in this quiet part of the borough. In summer, horse riders park their steeds on the grass outside to replenish, dogs bring their owners along for the craic, and it’s just idyllic. It’s not hard to see why in the height of summer or during winter frosts there are rarely any seats left and everybody is crammed in together knocking elbows and trading stories. Where a lot of traditional British pubs have floundered with the rise of Nouveau chic wine bars and gastro pubs, this old fashioned watering hole is still one of the most popular eateries around. With its antiquated and strangely appealing décor, it’s like being in a massive front room, full of strangers who are friendly, relaxed and there for the chat, the chill, and the fodder. The grub is great. I adore nothing more than getting myself down there on a Sunday, playing poo sticks with the river on the “historic” Ringley bridge (where L.S Lowry once sat and worked his magic) then retiring with a pint of Peroni waiting for my steak and onion pie to arrive. Real comforting British grub that just makes you melt with the warmth of it. For anyone who loves seafood, there’s plenty on the menu for starters-we usually share the fish platter. The steaks too are gorgeous, cooked to mouth watering perfection (medium rare if you must know), always with the generous choice of sides. The puds are divine with a special shout out to the chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream. There are always specials on the menu that you can guarantee will be beautifully cooked and of course where would we be without a Sunday roast which is just a must have from there. I usually finish the night with a delicious Irish coffee, before rolling out the door happier and fuller and only slightly lighter of purse--you expect you pay well for nice food. Staff are always friendly and accommodating, chatting to locals while serving them ale, and still service is prompt and efficient. You just feel nothing is too much trouble for them. If you’ve never been, then go. Get the family and turn up, there is always room for more. If you’re a regular, I’ll see you down there. Gordon Ramsey would be proud. By all accounts he is--his picture sits resplendent just right of the bar, beaming at you from a visit he made there some years ago. This place keeps its bells and whistles on the wall (OK, pot shoes, brass horseshoes and plates) but it doesn’t try to be anything else other than what it is. Traditional, British.
