  • 1 star reviewBad so, so bad. Served with mumbles, tainted with no hint of personality, people skills, absolutely no atmosphere, no communication skills, no customer welcome, no warmth. I felt so, so awkward waiting for my food. It was dentist waiting room awkward. Ordered 2 spring rolls £2.40 each. (Which I originally ordered so as to reheat during the week in my awesome airfryer. Please don' t judge, I live alone!!) Got to admit, that expectation was for each of these spring rolls; to be a fair size, crispy/flaky with a thin natural pancake pastry on the outside, filled with a nice stir-fry style filling. Nope! Take everything that a pancake roll is, then give this information to a 4 year old, ask said 4 year old to make & fry it, yup, that is what I got. Don't believe me? Order one then come back & press on the thumb below. Two pound, fourty pence each!!! Let go of my arm! So with that order, we had haddock & chips twice. I have been on this planet a while, but I pledge that I & my dear friend have NEVER been offered such tripe in our lives. My friend is 79 and LOVES his food. Trust me if I say to anyone he or I know, (he knows ALOT of people) that he would not even eat it, I am sincere in telling you that everyone would be stunned & shocked! Anyhow, the chips were reheats! The fish was cooked in batter that it was teased & taunted with the sheer idea of being coated on it. The oil was dirty and most certainly was not hot enough. The fish was under cooked & dripping with oil. I know that this sounds like an exaggeration, I see how it can be read as so, however I promise that it is not. There was not one point of crispness. It was £21!! (for Fish & Chips) I would have returned the tripe, the reheated overly dark chips as well a the lack luster depressed spring rolls (Although I was going to take these home & reheat these during the week, however as the fish & chips were so bad I unwrapped these with the intention to offer one to my friend & to eat one myself. So we had something to eat. I could not & most certainly would not offer such rubbish to my very dear friend) anyhow, as I was saying these spring rolls were as soggy, shiny and literally dripping with dirty oil as everything else. Ewwwww, just Ewwwww! I must admit, that my simple, logical & only request in life, (when parting with monies) is to recieve what was paid for. I feel that this is a fair request especially when ordering from a place which claims to be somewhat professional at such a task as it advertises its self as a fish & chip shop! I didn't go in to order a cabinet to be made or to hire a skip, I went in J's to order food!!! I would have complained, however to be fair after being presented with that, that very disgusting yuck which is very loosely discribed as food, which I would honestly not give my dog, I wouldn't of dared offer it to my cat. He would have left home after being so humiliated!!! My dear friend & I were somewhat overcome with utter confusion. Sadly by this point, we had both lost the will!! (We foolishly drove all the way from Brundish, we do this silliness now & again to get out & treat one another, we visit different chippies) I felt that with the lack of personality, cooking ability, warmth or expectation of customer service that attempting to complain would be like pushing a boulder up hill whilst in the middle of a three legged race. My friend & I chalked it up to 'Never Again', then we drove to Wickham Market & had some absolutely bang on, how it should be, food ordered from an establishment that knows how to communicate, show warmth, incasing you in a wecoming atmosphetre & owns the ability to cook in clean, hot oil & presents you with fresh hot edible food. If I could give J's 0 or better still a minus score then I would feel a little bit of satisfaction, I feel I deserve some satisfaction after the worst treat of my life. So, here I am attempting to prevent your illusion of the world to be shattered & wrapped in disappointment. Drive past J's & go to Wickham Market.

  • 5 star reviewI have been going to J's for years know and have never been let down. The food is great as you can tell by the numbers of costumers also waiting. I have try other local and non-local fish and chip shops and this has to be the best. Good quality all round and well priced. Would recommend to anyone in suffolk!

  • 2 star reviewExceptional fish but for the last few months (now 3/10/12) poor quality chips, neither crispy or soft but kinda dried up soft /hard. Also the younger fryer manor of leering at female customers is a bit off putting.

  • 1 star reviewWe had fish and chips from J's Traditional Fish And Chip Shop in Martlesham last night. It was inedible. The chips were covered in grit. We put it in the bin. When we phoned to complain we were told “yes we have had a few complaints lately. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. They are new potatoes”. Their attitude on the phone was abysmal. Fortunately we live in an area with two fish and chips shops. Oddly, the other shop does seem to be able to serve up chips without a healthy coating of dirt, so I will be going there in future. J - try washing them !!!
