• I was brought up in Knott End and went to St. William's because my parents were Catholic. I left St. William's in 1941 after getting, in an 11 plus exam in Fleetwood, a "semi" scholarship (£2.00 a term) to go to St. Joseph's College in Blackpool. I am now 90, after retiring 20 years ago from a career, in Wesminster with J.D.& D M Watson (engineering consultants) for 2 years, then 10 years world-wide in the RAF Airfield Construction Branch, followed by time with Associated Industrial Consultants Ltd and Balfour Beatty. At the time I went to the school, I lived in Knott End and St. William's was the nearest Catholic School. I recall two teachers - Mrs. Halpin, the headmistress, who I seem to remember lived in a house by the school, and Miss Walmsley who travelled in daily by bus from Garstang. My memories of the school are all pleasant. There was an unsurfaced playground and a single outside toilet. The school had one single room, which could be divided by a large curtain, under elevens on one side, 11 plus on the other. I wonder what it is like now? I have lived now for 40-odd years in Sevenoaks in Kent.
